Organisations operating in and around ‘class D’ Aerodromes.
What can CASR Part 135 operators do?
To mitigate operation risks around class D, an operator can:
- ensure flight crew are aware of issues and potential risks associated with any aspect of their planned flight. This includes issues specific to aerodromes with Class D airspace. It could also include:
- ATC / tower closure times
- operational restrictions
- adjacent airspace concerns
- where longer term known issues exist organisations should mitigate the risk as far as practicable through SOPs etc
- access and or reference relevant CASA documents that detail correct procedures and airspace structure around class D aerodromes
- engage with Airservices around any airspace or air traffic control service issues presenting potential safety risk to operations.
If you find occurrences meeting the reporting requirements of the Transport Safety Investigation Regulations, report them to the ATSB (Air Traffic Safety Bureau).
What is CASA doing or has already delivered?
To support operations in and around some busy class D airspace, we are developing a series of ‘Stay on Track’ guides for VFR pilots.
These guides provide guidance on flying into, out of and around a specific region and cover many of the major class D aerodromes. They can also help individuals in planning and conducting a flight.
