Individuals scoring 0-7: A score in this range indicates low risk alcohol consumption. However, consumption of six or more drinks on any one occasion is regarded as episodic heavy drinking ("binge" drinking) and carries an increased level of risk.
Individuals scoring 8–15: A score in this range indicates consumption in excess of low risk guidelines. Individuals scoring in this range may benefit from speaking about their consumption with their doctor or other health professional about ways to minimise their risk. Focussing on short-term goals for reducing risk is useful. Immediate goals might include decreasing the frequency of drinking, maintaining an alcohol free day, alternating with low-alcohol drinks, or keeping a drinking diary.
Individuals scoring 16–19: A score in this range indicates a high risk level of alcohol consumption. Individuals scoring at this level would benefit from speaking with their doctor or an AOD treatment agency about how their alcohol consumption can affect their health, mental health and general wellbeing. A doctor or AOD professional can assist with the development of an agreed plan for reducing consumption, and practical strategies for managing exposure to high-risk events, places and people.
Individuals scoring 20 or above: A score of 20 or above indicates consumption at the high risk level for alcohol related harm. Individuals scoring at this level are likely to be alcohol dependent and require more intensive intervention. Attempts to cut-down or cut-out alcohol consumption without medical supervision may be dangerous. Individuals scoring in this zone should seek specialist alcohol and other drug assessment to consider withdrawal options, pharmacotherapy and/or other more intensive treatments.

AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test)
The most widely used screen for alcohol use in Australia is called AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). You can complete the AUDIT on your own drinking behaviour to work out your level of risk. If your score is 8 or more, you are drinking in excess of low risk levels.
