Administration of many sport and recreational flying activities has been delegated to sporting aviation organisations. Many of these organisations issue their own pilot certificates and ratings.

The amateur aircraft builder assembles the aircraft from planes or a kit, with the SAAA inspector approving each major stage of production. CASA supervises the building of the first aircraft of a type. Pilots flying amateur-built aircraft require a flight crew licence issued by CASA.
