CTAF vs. CTAF(R) Study - Progress report
CASA's Office of Airspace Regulation has engaged Ambidji Group Pty Ltd to conduct a study of operations at non-controlled aerodromes in order to determine the contribution to safety or otherwise of the mandatory carriage and use of radio at non-controlled aerodromes in comparison with aerodromes at which the mandatory carriage and use of radio is not required.
Data has been collected from the identified survey locations and is currently undergoing analysis by Ambidji Group. Incident data has been obtained and is also undergoing analysis. Research into alerted versus unalerted see and avoid environments has been conducted and an analysis of various models implemented at non-controlled aerodromes overseas is complete.
Preliminary findings were presented by Ambidji Group to the Airspace Consultative Forum meeting held on 12 August 2008. It is important to note that these are preliminary findings only and conclusions should not be drawn from the information presented. A copy of the presentation is available on the CASA website.
Final conclusions and recommendations will be made by Ambidji Group, pending the completion of the data analysis. The Final Report will be distributed for further consultation with industry prior to acceptance or otherwise of the report’s recommendations.
Adelaide airspace review
CASA’s Office of Airspace Regulation has engaged Hyder Consulting Pty Ltd to conduct an independent review of the airspace within 50 nautical miles of Adelaide to ensure airspace arrangements remain safe and meet air traffic demand. The review will determine the appropriateness of the current airspace classifications and the air traffic services provided, review access for all types of airspace users and provide recommendations to address any issues of the current airspace architecture. The review will assess the type and frequency of operations in the area with particular emphasis on passenger transport operations. All recommendations will be supported by risk assessments and cost-benefit analysis. Industry briefings have been held in Adelaide. Once complete, the review will be available on this website.
