Wildlife Hazard forum - 2007

Almost 100 people attended the 2007 Wildlife Hazard forum, hailing from a diverse range of organisations including airlines large and small, airports, the Australian Museum, the Department of Defence, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, and aviation wildlife hazard management consultants.

Associate Professor David Paton, who has been helping Adelaide Airport with their bird and animal hazard management for 20 years, kicked off this years event with his talk on wildlife hazards at Adelaide.

David was followed by Gil Richardson who spoke about the challenges of l and use planning near Airports.

The next presentation was from Mark Wilson (Melbourne Airport) and Stephanie Bolt (Adelaide Airport) who led everyone through a birdstrike case study, where both airports experienced similar events at a similar time of the year.

Dr Silke Nebel talked about her research into the effects of drought on bird movements and this was followed by an update on the DNA research and Mega Bat study by Dr Rebecca Johnson (Australian Museum).

This was followed in turn by presentations from representatives of Darwin, Maroochydore, Wellington New Zealand, Hamilton Island and Broome who all provided their perspectives on wildlife hazards.

The final presentation of the day was from Laurie Taylor, who is Qantas’s 737 Fleet Manager Engineering.   Laurie spoke about the work that he and his team have been doing to capture the costs associated with wildlife strikes.

The day was wrapped up with an open forum headed by an expert panel, which provided for a good exchange of information not just from the panel but from the audience as well.

Like last years Forum - the feedback on the forum has been extremely positive and another forum is planned for next year.

The education and information sharing forum was organised by the Australian Aviation Wildlife Hazard Group and sponsored by the Australian Airports Association, CASA, Melbourne Airport, Qantas and Virgin Blue.
